6 Home Repairs You Shouldn’t Attempt Yourself
If you’re a homeowner, you know how frustrating it can be when things need to be repaired. It can also get expensive fast. Some repairs may be easier and much less expensive to just do yourself. That being said, there are others that should only be done by a professional. Here are 6 home repairs you should never attempt yourself.
Repairing Large Stucco Cracks
Small cracks in stucco walls or ceilings can be attempted on your own. There are many products available on the market that you can use to fill these. However, if a crack in your stucco is very large, it’s worth it to just hire a professional. They’ll be able to make your stucco look as good as new and they’ll be able to get it done much quicker than you could too.
Major Renovations
Huge renovations can require years of experience to properly pull off. There is so much that goes into a renovation that requires a professional’s eye to be done correctly. Adding and removing walls, Adding floors, and replacing flooring can all be complicated processes. If you do choose to conduct a renovation on your own, be prepared for a lot to go wrong.
Electrical Repairs
Because of the dangerous nature of electrical work, skip attempting these repairs (no matter how many instructional videos you watch online) yourself. A professional electrician is much less likely to hurt themselves. Your health and safety are worth whatever extra money hiring a pro will cost you.
Gas Appliance Repairs
For the same reason you shouldn’t attempt electrical repairs yourself, hire a professional anytime you need a gas appliance, such as an oven, fixed. If you make a mistake you risk causing serious harm to yourself, your family, and your pets.
Plumbing Issues
It’s worth hiring a professional to deal with any plumbing issues you might have, because if you attempt them yourself, you can actually make them much worse. A leaky faucet can turn into an entirely flooded home quickly if you don’t know what you’re doing, and imagine how much more expensive that would be to repair.
Removing Trees
Again, with this one, it’s a safety issue. An inexperienced person should never attempt to cut trees down off of their property, especially large ones. A tree could fall on your home (talk about repairs!), a neighbor’s home, a car, or worse – you. It’s not worth the risk to attempt to do on your own. Leave tree removal to the pros.
House repairs can be fun – they make your home a better place for you to live! Just remember that no repair is worth your safety and if you make things worse they’ll end up being a lot more expensive.
