No one can deny that kitchen worktops get a lot of use. They’re the workhorses of the kitchen, after all. The worktop is where we store our appliances and gadgets and do prep work, etc. The kitchen worktop can easily get dirty – and worse, stained or scratched – when we cook and unpack groceries and place other food and drink items on the surface. Most kitchen worktops are easy to keep clean, however, and all they need is a bit of a wipe down if they are dirty or get a spill. But if you want to give your worktop a more thorough cleaning, here’s how you can properly clean kitchen worktops, from granite to tile to stainless steel and more.

Marble worktops
Marble worktops are undeniably beautiful and elegant, and they can add character to your kitchen. But it can be a bit of a challenge to make sure your marble worktop retains its beauty and sheen. For one, marble is a material which can easily get scratched, stained, or etched, so be careful. The good news, though, is that it’s quite easy to keep your marble worktop clean. You simply need to have a mixture of warm water, gentle dish soap or cleaner, and a spray bottle. Place the cleaning mixture in the spray bottle and wipe down any spills or crumbs and grease with some soft towels or a good quality sponge. Try to avoid cleaners which are acidic, however, such as lemon juice and vinegar, as these can cause etching on the marble’s surface. If your marble worktop has a deeper stain such as a red wine stain, make a paste of baking soda and water and let it sit on the marble for 24 hours minimum.
Granite worktops
Granite is also quite a beautiful worktop material, and it’s common in many kitchens. But while there’s still some debate and numerous cleaning tips about how to keep granite worktops clean, the simplest is often the best. For granite, you don’t need too many special cleaning products; just use a gentle soap or cleaner and a microfibre cloth or sponge. Wipe any dirt with soap and water, and just make sure to wipe it dry with another sponge or piece of cloth. You can also use isopropyl alcohol to keep your counter bacteria-free.
Tile worktops
Tile worktops are common as well, and the good thing about tile is that it is also easy to keep clean. You can clean the surface with a simple soap and water mixture and a kitchen sponge, but don’t do any aggressive or harsh scrubbing as it can damage tiles with a glossy finish. The only big concern with tile is the grout, so to keep this clean, use bleach and a scouring pad and powder, so it doesn’t accumulate any dirt or stains.
Stainless steel worktops
Stainless steel worktops are becoming more popular as well, and while they’re common in commercial kitchens, residential kitchens are now featuring more stainless steel worktops too. Stainless steel worktops are relatively easy to keep clean with a piece of cloth or a sponge, a brush with soft bristles, and a mixture of gentle soap and water.
